Warren County Adult New Readers is a basic literacy program for actual and functional illiterates and those who speak another language and want to learn English. Clients must be 18 years of age and not enrolled in school.
Our tutors work on an individual basis with their students in libraries, churches, or other public buildings in Warren County. Meeting in homes is not allowed. Tutors and clients should meet for a minimum of one hour a week at a time mutually convenient to both. Tutors will be matched with clients in a reasonable geographic area.
WCANR is a 12-month program. Allow some time off for yourself and your client, but extended vacations are not wise.
Tutors must complete the free 12-hour Laubach Tutor Training Workshop. Tutors also have the opportunity to attend in-service workshops on learning differences and English As A Second Language.
A tutor must have at least a high school diploma or a GED. |
| Be dependable and prompt. Have an interest in others and ability to relate to them, respectful of confidentiality, literate, flexible, friendly, patient and optimistic. Sense of humor is helpful. |
| Heightened perception of the world around you, deepened understanding of values and lifestyles different from your own, and broadened imagination for creative problem solving. |
1. Help student develop a sense of self-worth and a positive attitude toward learning by affirming his/her progress.
2. Show acceptance of student by listening to what he/she has to say.
3. Give encouragement when a skill is mastered.
4. Attempt to understand why student has difficulty in learning to read.
5. Prepare for each lesson and meet regularly and punctually.
6. Review independent work and keep records of student’s progress.
7. Return monthly tutoring calendars to WCANR office.
